The accurate generation of non-linear waves, free surface tracking and wave breaking represent a challenging tasks for Eulerian CFD models. In the Lagrangian Framework, particle methods are quite suited to reproduce large and fast deformation as well as fluid splitting and mixing. In this study are considered two Lagrangian particle models based respectively on the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) [1] and the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM) [2]. The methods are introduced and compared. The models are validated on the generation of regular waves, solitary waves and a non-linear wave train impact with a box-shaped structure. Results achieved by both models are in accordance with the reference laboratory results.
